Why you'll love it

Dark, glossy leaves and white spathes that arrive without warning.

It is the plant people mean when they say they want something that flowers indoors. It also tells you when it is thirsty — the leaves droop, you water it, and within a few hours it stands back up. Very hard to lose.

Looking after it

Light

Water

Common questions.

Why is my peace lily drooping?

Almost always thirst. A Peace Lily wilts visibly when the soil dries out and recovers within hours of being watered — it is the most honest plant in the house about what it wants. If it droops while the soil is still wet, the problem is the opposite: the roots are sitting in water.

Why is my peace lily not flowering?

Not enough light. It survives in a dim corner but it will not flower there. Move it somewhere with bright indirect light and it usually starts producing spathes again.

Is a peace lily a good plant for a beginner?

Yes, and it is the one we suggest most often for a first plant. It tolerates the low light of a flat, and because it droops before it suffers, it tells you what it needs instead of dying quietly.
